Real Madrid maintained their perfect start in the Champions League with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. The game started slowly, with the first shot arriving only after 20 minutes when Leipzig’s Ridle Baku fired straight at Thibaut Courtois. Real Madrid responded immediately, but Kylian Mbappe dragged his effort wide. Both sides had chances to score, but Real Madrid broke the deadlock just before half-time when Bernardo Silva converted from close range in the 43rd minute. It was the midfielder’s first goal for Real Madrid since joining from Manchester City in the summer.
Arda Guler doubled the hosts’ lead seven minutes into the second half, before Mbappe added to the tally in the 83rd minute with his 12th goal in 12 games this season.
Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for the German side to make it 3-1, but Yan Diomande struck against his former club in the 87th minute to restore Real Madrid’s three-goal advantage and seal the victory.
Speaking after the match, Mourinho praised Silva and Guler for their performances and goals. "He [Silva] is a great player and has played a great match. Another player who hasn't been playing as a starter for a few matches.“The team, when it has a player like him, or like Arda [Guler] in the midfield, the team has more outlet, has more control, has more speed in the transition, making the ball reach the attackers. I am very happy."
However, the victory did not fully satisfy Mourinho, who stressed that his team still had room for improvement. "I want to always improve. I'm here since 105 days, 104 days, something like that. Obviously we're not at where I want to be, but there are things that we do better today than what we used to do before," he said.
Real Madrid will next face Barcelona in the first Clasico of the season on October 25 in La Liga, while Leipzig will take on SV Elversberg in their next Bundesliga fixture.
